After a passionate but peaceful night, Fargo and Antonia had breakfast the next morning in the Nueces House’s dining room and then rode down to the waterfront to pick up Rooster’s wagon at Lucas Peabody’s place of business. Antonia was back in trousers, a man’s shirt, and boots and a hat this morning. Fargo liked her just fine that way, but he also knew it would be a long time before he forgot how she had looked at dinner the night before.

Peabody gave Fargo a bank draft for the cotton, which he would pass along to Rooster, who would deliver it in turn to the planters who had grown the cotton in the first place. Then, after shaking hands with Peabody, Fargo and Antonia climbed onto the wagon and headed north again. Their stay in Corpus Christi had been a short one, but Fargo would remember it fondly.

Without the load of cotton bales weighing down the wagon, the mule team was able to travel at a faster pace. Fargo pushed the mules a little, finding that he was anxious to get back to the mustang camp. A lot could have happened in the time that he and Antonia had been gone. With any luck, he thought, they would be able to reach the camp in a couple of days, with only one night spent on the trail.
